      In a lot of high end restaurants they have gratuity including so it’s like 18% of the bill gets tipped no matter what. So if you sell big you make big even if they are stingy

      Clearly 1000$ … That’s 20% right. They worked for it. The server has to walk over to one side of the room, and bring the bottle to the other side of the room.

      This is my qualm with tips. It should NOT be a percentage! If you pour me a 1000 dollar whiskey, what difference then are you actions to someone else ordering a 10 dollar whiskey? You just poured a bottle except my pour cost me 200 more. It’s insane. Yet here we are.

    I used to work at Crystal Palace in Magic Kingdom, if you work as a server there you die there. That’s a known thing about food and beverage in Disney World. A full-time server at Crystal Palace is only four shifts a week and you can either do the breakfast or dinner service. They easily can hit six figures just being a glorified bus boy because it’s a buffet.

      The joke i always heard was that the nicest cars in the West Clock parking lot were CRT and Crystal Palace servers.

      Also heard about part timers that moved away from Orlando that would fly in to work shifts because it was so lucrative. All that autogratuity.

    Josh is right but what isn’t explained tip share generally means that the servers are getting a relatively decent wage ranging from 10-16 depending on the place.

      Depending where in south fl this is 100% accurate. When I was bar backing (in naples) I never made less than 25$ an hour threw tips, And made like 9$ an hour
      Our bar tenders made like 15/16$ an hour and recieved about 2x our tips per day.

    My wife is a bartender/server at a high end hotel and makes 120k. It’s a union job so the wage is 24 an hour which by itself isn’t horrible but it’s plus tips so clearly that’s what makes it worth it, although…the DISCOUNTS is where it’s at. 50% off all food and drinks (for her and 3 of her “guests” which is perfect cuz we have 2 kids..) at any of their locations and brands worldwide. I work for an airline so I get huge discounts on flights….out best deal so far (the discounts range in savings and you have to take whatever date is available so it takes meticulous planning and a bit of luck..) we flew to Japan, $90 per person ROUND TRIP FIRST CLASS, then stayed in a $1200 suite for $110 a night. Basically we had a 80k vacation for $1500. The discounts allow us to experience the life of luxury for at least a few weeks a year, then we go back to our blue collar real life of mixing drinks for the filthy rich and in my case, cleaning up puke from planes.

      Not tipping on alcohol was very common especially in very high end restaurants for a very very long time. If you weren’t aware thats probably why they said that.

    I know a lot of people in service that make $70k-100k, it is a thing specifically bartenders in high end restaurants and hotels.

    Especially in Vegas, tipping is everywhere. My mom was a cocktail waitress in a handful of casinos for over 25 years and could easily clear $500-$1000 a night just in tips depending on what section she was in. And then on top of that she got paid a decent hourly as well. She had a friend that saved a million dollars cash in 10 years. Tipping culture is honestly pretty annoying for most normal restaurants and bars but higher end establishments or basically anywhere in Vegas, it very much benefits the employee.

      As an executive chef who worked his way up from a dishwasher, thank you! but I assure you most chefs would feel awkward taking your money and just want to share our passion for food with you. Most of us know we are doomed financially anyway

      Same it is baffling that the literal backbone, heart, and soul from a restaurant comes from the kitchen staff. Without the kitchen staff, the servers wouldn’t be able to serve anybody so it’s even more baffling that servers get the tips instead. Arguably the kitchen staff work way harder than the servers and those who worked in these kitchens know how fast paced and chaotic it can be

      And when the kitchen screw up? Who is entertaining, suggesting spots, make you feel special and welcome, runs back and forth for you? Guys I am a chef, moved to service and expanding up the company chain now and I tell you: kitchen shouldn’t get more than 30% of tips. And I’d say the same if I was back in the kitchen!

      Not affordable, reliable. Most young employees today, do not care one bit about how they provide good service, are not reliable on the schedule, lazy and entitled.
      Then you get the ones that do not play the victim, who are friendly, on top of their tables, and they are the ones that you do not hear complaining.
      But you are correct, tipping culture is out of control. Today, they feel entitled to it, rather than earning it.

    I worked in Dallas, I used to make around 85k a year while going to college. Just 5 shifts a week in a high end restaurant. It was very expensive. I wasn’t the one who made the most, some Servers who had been there longer and had certain clientele used to make over 185k a year. It’s crazy. It’s a very stressful job with so much pressure but you make enough to pay for college or even supporting a good way of living. I made less money nowadays with a degree but I don’t have server dreams anymore or crazy pain in my joints or feet.
